Celebrated Kelowna Sculptor Behind Iconic Landmarks Passes Away at 91

Robert Dow Reid, the talented sculptor behind some of Kelowna’s most cherished landmarks, has passed away at 91. He was renowned for iconic pieces like ‘The Sails’ (originally called Spirit of Sail) and the dolphin sculpture at Rhapsody Plaza. Reid also created a striking work titled “West Wind,” which was unveiled in 2016 at Kelowna General Hospital.

Reid’s influence stretched beyond Kelowna. His artworks can be found in various cities across Canada, including Surrey and Regina, as well as internationally in Kasugai, Japan, which is Kelowna’s sister city. His family shared their grief, remembering him as an artist who touched many lives.

Born in Scotland, Reid moved to Kelowna in 1964. His love for the sea, nature, and human connection fueled his creativity. His pieces often reflect movement and the beauty of aquatic life. Remarkably, some of his artwork is featured in collections around the world, including one owned by Queen Elizabeth II.

An interesting fact is that Reid’s influence on the local art scene lives on through the R. Dow Reid Gallery at Hambleton Galleries, which has been promoting art from local and international artists for over three decades.
