The Global Initiative for Food Security and Ecosystem Preservation (GIFSEP) is stepping up to help Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) fight hunger through innovative farming programs. This announcement came from Dr. Michael David, the Executive Director of GIFSEP, during the organization’s 10th anniversary celebration in Abuja on October 17, 2025.
Dr. David shared that the Food for All initiative is not just a project; it’s a call to action for hope and community involvement. Through the #Food4PWDs campaign, GIFSEP aims to empower PWDs by teaching them to grow their own food. This initiative is a crucial step toward making food systems that can withstand climate change while fostering innovation and community support.
GIFSEP plans to collaborate with CBM Global Disabilities, an international group devoted to ending hunger in disabled communities. Dr. David highlighted the need for more funding and partnerships to broaden their reach.
Other notable figures supported this mission. Mr. John Makina, the Country Director of Oxfam in Nigeria, praised GIFSEP for its ten years of transparency and commitment. He emphasized the importance of grassroots organizations in driving real change.
Mrs. Judith Gbagidi from ActionAid Nigeria acknowledged GIFSEP’s efforts in including PWDs in its projects. Such inclusion is crucial in achieving broader social goals. Similarly, Mrs. Paulyn Opara from Action Against Hunger expressed confidence in GIFSEP’s ongoing work and promised continued support.
Dr. Olumide Ojo from the UK aid program Propcom+ recognized GIFSEP as a reliable partner and assured backing for future endeavors. Ms. Regina Nwaneri from the Federal Ministry of Environment also voiced the ministry’s commitment to improving lives for PWDs.
Statistics show that PWDs are disproportionately affected by food insecurity. A 2021 report from the World Food Programme indicated that nearly 1 in 5 persons with disabilities experiences severe food insecurity. This stark reality makes GIFSEP’s initiatives even more vital.
This anniversary event not only celebrated past achievements but also offered a glimpse into a hopeful future, aiming to shift the narrative around disability and food production in Nigeria.
