The Baltimore Marriott Waterfront gleamed in blue and gold as Coppin State University celebrated its 125th anniversary with a special gala. Alumni, students, and community leaders came together to honor a university that has impacted many lives in Baltimore.
“Coppin raised me,” shared alumna Dr. Vaness Cooper. “This feels like a family reunion, celebrating 125 years of resilience.”
President Dr. Anthony L. Jenkins received a heartfelt introduction from his daughters, who shared their pride and admiration for their father’s work. “He has created an environment where everyone can succeed,” Ashley Jenkins said. Their touching words drew applause and tears from the crowd.
This year’s gala featured an auction-style format where guests raised paddles to support scholarships. The event exceeded its goal, with over $500,000 pledged. This was part of a larger fundraising effort that has so far raised $25.5 million for the university.
“It was inspiring to see those paddles—each one represents a life that will change thanks to Coppin,” remarked Marcus Jennings.
Among the notable guests was 10th District Baltimore City Councilwoman Phylicia Porter, who emphasized the importance of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). “They are vital to our communities. We must support the students attending these institutions,” she said, highlighting her own experience as an HBCU graduate.
Jenkins took to the stage and encouraged guests to consider their impact. “Your presence here is a sign of leadership and kindness,” he said. “When you support a student, you are investing in the future.”
The evening also honored outstanding contributors to Coppin’s mission. Thompson Hospitality received the Wings of Excellence Award, and the Barlands were recognized for their civic leadership with the Eagle Legacy Award. “Coppin gave me my start,” said Brittny Bagley, this year’s Eagle of the Year, expressing gratitude for her time at the university.
The night didn’t stop there; guests enjoyed a performance by R&B artist Carl Thomas, followed by dancing with DJs Jazze Pha and Ryan Kersey. “Heeeeey Coppin!” echoed through the venue until late into the night.
Closing off the evening, Jenkins reminded everyone of the university’s commitment: “For 125 years, we’ve nurtured potential and transformed lives. We are building a stronger Baltimore, one student at a time.”
As the blue and gold lights faded, the pride was palpable. With a rich history and a promising future, Coppin State University is ready to continue shaping the lives of many for years to come.
