The Women’s Food Alliance (WFA) is gearing up to celebrate its 13th anniversary on April 28. This dynamic group connects and supports women in the hospitality industry across Northeast and Central Florida and Coastal Georgia. Leigh Cort, the founder and president of WFA, describes their “lucky 13th” celebration, which will be held at Lynda’s at the South Ponte Vedra Ocean Club.
What started in 2013 with just eight members has blossomed into a thriving community of over 175 women from various backgrounds. Members include restaurateurs, chefs, caterers, event planners, and more. This diversity adds rich perspectives and experiences to the WFA.
Recently, WFA hosted a dinner at Mission Resort and Club in Howey-in-the-Hills. This gathering was not only a chance for established members to meet potential new members, but also an important step in expanding into Florida’s Lake County Region. It was a wonderful opportunity for attendees to share their personal stories and connect with other talented women in the field.
One exciting new initiative from WFA is the “Kids Can Cook Baking & Dessert Contest.” This spring and summer, children aged 8-13 can participate by submitting their favorite dessert recipes along with a story about why it means something to them. The finals will take place on July 15 at The Venue in Hastings. Leigh Cort emphasizes the importance of preserving family baking traditions and using healthy ingredients. “It’s about creating memories,” she says.
The contest’s grand prize winner will receive a family vacation for two nights at Mission Resort and Club, with finalists receiving invitations to the live judging event. Entries are due by June 19 and can be sent to leigh@leighcortpublicity.com.
The impact of cooking on today’s youth is significant. Recent surveys show a growing interest in cooking among children, with many wanting to prepare meals for their families. By encouraging this, WFA not only celebrates culinary skills but also strengthens family bonds.
Hospitality can be a tough industry, but the support from WFA members is inspiring. Having experienced a fulfilling 13 years, the future looks bright with even more opportunities for community building and celebration ahead.
