On February 13 and 14, 2025, the European Space Agency (ESA) celebrated two decades of innovation support via its Business Incubation Centres (BIC). This milestone event was held in Munich, Germany, and gathered entrepreneurs, space experts, and policymakers.
Dr. Josef Aschbacher, the ESA Director General, opened the event, emphasizing the role of ESA BICs in fostering economic growth. He shared, “ESA BICs have been vital for Europe’s space innovation. We leverage space technology to solve global challenges while promoting sustainability. Our initial support has turned many startup ideas into real solutions.”
Markus Blume, State Minister of Bavaria, also spoke about the importance of collaboration in the space industry. The ESA BIC network has supported over 1,800 startups, with around 280 new ones joining every year. This initiative has attracted more than €1.25 billion in private investments and created thousands of jobs across its 33 centers located in 22 countries.
Insightful Discussions and Awards
During engaging discussions, Géraldine Naja, ESA’s Director of Commercialisation, highlighted the essential role of ESA BICs in connecting startups with established industries and academia. She explained that these centers foster a dynamic environment that enhances growth and innovation. Programs like the ESA Partnership Initiative for Commercialisation (EPIC) support startups by connecting them with key partners.
Awards were presented to recognize outstanding startups within the ESA BIC community. Thomas Perry from Spherical won the Junior Category Award, celebrating innovative startups in early stages. In the Senior Category, Open Cosmos received accolades for its notable impact and growth.
Additionally, Dr. Aschbacher honored Helene Huby, Co-Founder of The Exploration Company, with an Honourable Mention for her significant contributions to the space sector.
Collaboration and Partnerships
ESA BICs are committed to providing startups with customized support, including business development and funding access. The EPIC initiative connects startups with corporate and academic partners, creating pathways for entrepreneurship. The ESA Marketplace and various technology brokers also play crucial roles in facilitating growth for these space ventures.
The event wrapped up with remarks from Luca Del Monte and Philip Thomas, reinforcing the importance of ongoing support and partnerships for future space innovations.
