Celebrating 25 Years of Excellence: O’Brian Recognized for His Impactful Service in Communications at Binghamton University Athletics

ORLANDO, Fla. – David O’Brian, a familiar face in Binghamton athletics, received a special honor from the College Sports Communicators at the #CSCUnite25 convention in Orlando. He was celebrated for 25 years of dedicated service to Binghamton University and the field of college sports communication.

O’Brian, who manages athletics communications for the Bearcats, was recognized during a Special Awards Luncheon. Senior Associate Athletic Director John Hartrick remarked, “David is the backbone of our office. His commitment and passion for promoting our student-athletes are unmatched. We’re lucky he’s been with us for so long.”

Since joining Binghamton in June 2000, O’Brian has played an essential role in handling media relations, forging connections with student interns, and expanding athletic archives. His experience at the University of Maryland helped him navigate Binghamton’s transition from Division III to Division I.

Former colleague Jim Norris praised O’Brian’s work ethic and character, stating, “He’s passionate and dedicated, truly a role model for others.” Retired Athletic Director Joel Thirer also expressed his admiration, noting O’Brian’s unwavering dedication to the university and its athletes.

On a broader scale, the role of sports communicators has become increasingly important. According to a recent survey by the Sports Communication Association, over 70% of athletic departments recognize the value of effective communication in enhancing their brand image and increasing fan engagement. This shift reflects the growing recognition of sports communication as a vital part of athletic success.

David lives in Apalachin with his wife Lora and their three children: Natalie, Justin, and Brandon. His journey is not just a personal achievement; it’s a testament to the power of dedication in the world of college athletics.
