Google has highlighted two early image search milestones that helped shape how people find visual information online: Google Images, launched in July 2001, and Similar Images, which became available in 2009. The updates are part of a broader look back at 25 years of work on making visual information more accessible and useful.
In July 2001, Google launched Google Images after the interest around Jennifer Lopez’s iconic green Versace dress showed that text links alone were not enough for some searches. The product let people search and instantly explore visual content from across the web.
In 2009, Google introduced Similar Images, a feature designed to help users find pictures without relying on text alone. The example given was a search for “bow,” where results could include hair bows as well as bows and arrows. Users could then click the image they wanted and tap “find similar images” to see more of the same kind of result without starting a new search.
The two updates reflect a shift in image search from text-based results toward more direct visual discovery. For users, that meant easier ways to identify and compare images, and fewer steps when searching for related visuals.
