The Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program (ANSEP) recently celebrated its 30th anniversary. Over the years, it has made a big difference in the lives of many Alaskans by improving education and career options.
ANSEP has supported the growth of more than 2,500 students from all kinds of backgrounds. The celebration was a chance for everyone to reflect on the program’s journey, celebrate student achievements, and thank those who have helped along the way.
Michael Bourdukofsky, who works on special projects for ANSEP, shared how the program reaches students from kindergarten to those working on PhDs. “We have thousands of students from over 100 communities in Alaska,” he said. “We aim to provide a great education and endless opportunities for all.”
During the event, Izzy Yasana from Nike spoke to students about pursuing higher education. Her advice? “Always be proud of who you are and where you come from. Learn to tell your story, and embrace discomfort — that’s where you’ll find growth.” Yasana expressed her admiration for ANSEP and its positive impact on students in Alaska and beyond. She encouraged students to pursue their dreams and give back to their communities when they can.
One of the students in the ANSEP acceleration academy is Isabella January. She has already earned 125 college credits. “I love science and just took an engineering class, which opened my eyes to so many possibilities,” she shared. Isabella has been accepted into the UMKC School of Medicine and aims to earn her MD in four years.
ANSEP continues to shape the future for many Alaskan students, helping them achieve their academic and career goals.
