Celebrating 30 Years of ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’: Behind the Scenes of the Reunion and the Hilarious Emmy Moment with Ray Romano and Brad Garrett

On November 24, CBS will celebrate the beloved sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond with a special reunion. The show first graced our screens nearly 30 years ago, premiering on September 13, 1996. Fans are eager to see the surviving cast members come together after so many years.

Ray Romano, who inspired the character he played, and the show’s creator, Phil Rosenthal, shared insights about the special’s timing. “It’s just rounding off,” Romano noted about the unusual release date.

The reunion was spurred by demand. Rosenthal attempted to organize reunions for the 20th and 25th anniversaries but faced obstacles. Recently, CBS’s new president, Amy Reisenbach, showed enthusiasm for the project. “I just selfishly wanted to see my friends and celebrate our nice show,” Rosenthal said.

Earlier this year, the Paley Center in New York hosted an exhibit titled “30 Years of Everybody Loves Raymond,” which inspired the reunion idea. Initially, they tried to coordinate it with the exhibit but faced technical difficulties. However, CBS found a perfect slot right before Thanksgiving, which worked out well.

Romano’s journey to creating Everybody Loves Raymond began with his appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman in 1995. That led Letterman’s production company to sign him, setting the stage for the sitcom. Rosenthal, who was impressed by Romano’s stand-up routine, quickly joined forces with him. “The show was born 30 years ago,” Rosenthal recalled.

The announcement of the reunion came shortly after instances of Romano and co-star Brad Garrett interacting at the Emmys, which attracted attention online. Their comedic banter about aging and the show’s legacy left a mark, going viral and generating positive feedback. Romano, who stays away from social media, was pleasantly surprised by the audience’s reaction.

The reunion promises to be a heartwarming affair, featuring fan-favorite cast members like Patricia Heaton, Madylin Sweeten, and Sullivan Sweeten, while honoring those who have passed away, including Doris Roberts. The special is set to air from 8 to 9:30 p.m. on CBS and will also stream on Paramount+.

As nostalgia thrives, shows from the past, including Friends and The Office, are being revisited. This trend highlights how audiences crave connections to the characters and stories that once brought them joy. With the reunion of Everybody Loves Raymond, fans can reminisce about the laughter that filled their homes and relive cherished moments with the Barone family.
