SANDPOINT — The Bonner Community Food Bank is celebrating its 45th anniversary with a special event tonight. This celebration is not just a party; it’s also a fundraiser aimed at continuing the vital work they do in the community.
From 5 to 8 p.m. at the Bonner County Fairgrounds, guests will enjoy delicious bites from local restaurants and have a chance to bid in silent and live auctions. The money raised will go directly to supporting the food bank’s programs.
Executive Director Debbie Love emphasizes the importance of this milestone. “In 45 years, we’ve grown from a small pantry to two full-service locations, helping over 3,000 households each month,” she shares. “We’re not just about food; we’re a hub for community connection and strength.”
The food bank began in 1980, started by a dedicated group of locals wanting to feed those in need. Known originally as the Ministerial Association, it has moved several times until settling at its current location in 2011. This nonprofit provides food at no cost, relying solely on donations and grants. They encourage walk-ins and aim to make everyone feel welcome, especially during tough times.
“We understand that anyone can face hard times,” Love adds. “We want to remove the stigma of asking for help by making the process dignified.”
Hunger is a serious issue in Bonner County. In 2017, the food bank assisted around 900 families monthly, but by 2021, that number had risen to over 1,000. In 2022, it climbed further to approximately 1,350 families. Just between 2022 and 2024, the demand for services shot up by 53%. Today, around 3,000 households rely on their support each month.
Contrary to misconceptions, Love points out that many who seek help are hardworking individuals or families who have run out of options. “Many are prideful, especially those from older generations. They grew up in tough times and feel they can only ask for minimal help,” she explains.
One of the ways the food bank keeps supplies fresh is through a grocery rescue program, where local stores donate items that are close to expiration yet still good. Additionally, partnerships with local gardeners provide fresh produce during the summer months.
Among the most needed food items are peanut butter, canned meats, and sauces. Garden-fresh produce is always welcome, and the food bank can arrange pickups if needed.
Local restaurants like Beet and Basil and Sweet Lou’s are contributing to tonight’s event. Beer and beverages will also be provided by local breweries.
If you can’t attend the celebration but want to help, your support is still appreciated. Donations of food or financial contributions play a crucial role in assisting the food bank’s ongoing mission.
