Alstom, a major player in sustainable transportation, has marked ten years of its partnership with Indian Railways through Madhepura Electric Locomotive Private Limited (MELPL). This collaboration aims to boost India’s freight services by producing powerful electric locomotives. So far, they have delivered over 550 Prima T8 locomotives, each boasting 12,000 horsepower.
Back in 2015, Indian Railways awarded Alstom a contract worth €3.5 billion to supply 800 advanced double-section locomotives. These WAG-12B units can haul around 6,000 tonnes and are manufactured in Madhepura, Bihar. This project aligns with India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, with over 85% local production, helping establish India as the sixth nation worldwide to produce such robust locomotives.
Olivier Loison, Managing Director of Alstom India, celebrated their progress, stating that this partnership has transformed freight transport and laid the groundwork for a local industrial network. “We’ve not only delivered powerful locomotives but also trained more than 22,000 railway staff,” he noted.
The manufacturing site in Madhepura is one of the largest greenfield facilities in India. It can produce 120 locomotives each year. The WAG-12B boasts advanced IGBT-based propulsion technology, which enhances energy efficiency and minimizes noise. The project has also created over 10,000 jobs and invested in community projects in 21 villages, impacting more than 30,000 lives.

In the fiscal year ending March 31, 2025, Alstom reported €18.5 billion in sales.
