Bowie State University’s Beloved Coach Retires After 40 Years
Bowie State University is saying goodbye to Coach Darrell Brooks, who’s retiring after a remarkable 40 years in coaching. He dedicated 16 years to his alma mater, Bowie State, where he completed his education and played basketball as a point guard.
With a career record of 251 wins and 241 losses, Coach Brooks has left a significant mark. He led the Bulldogs to five Northern Division championships and two CIAA Tournament titles in 2013 and 2017. Under his guidance, the team appeared in the NCAA regional tournaments, even reaching the semifinals in 2011.
“It has been an honor to coach here,” Brooks expressed. “I’m thankful for all the players, coaches, and fans. The memories we created together will stay with me forever.”
His impact didn’t just show in statistics. “Coach Brooks’ leadership has been extraordinary,” said Dr. Jolisa Williams, Interim VP for Intercollegiate Athletics. “His passion inspired many student-athletes, and we are grateful for the culture of excellence he fostered.”
Before his time at Bowie State, Brooks was an assistant coach at George Washington University. He helped the Colonials make four postseason appearances. His extensive coaching journey also includes experience at various universities, showcasing a versatile career that enriched many programs.
Brooks’s story does not just belong to Bowie State; it reflects a broader trend in college sports. According to a 2021 NCAA report, only around 50% of NCAA Division II coaches have ten or more years of experience. Brooks’s four decades make him not only a fixture in athletics at Bowie State but also an outlier in the coaching community.
As we celebrate Coach Brooks’s achievements, we also acknowledge the profound influence he had on his players and the program. His legacy will live on through the athletes he inspired and the community he cherished.
