East Texas Baptist University recently celebrated the achievements of 177 graduates during a heartfelt ceremony held in Baker Chapel. This event highlighted the accomplishments of 113 undergraduate students, 62 master’s graduates, and two doctoral graduates.
University President Dr. J. Blair Blackburn congratulated the graduates, expressing pride in their dedication and growth. He emphasized that their hard work reflects the essence of the university, which focuses on academic success, spiritual growth, and answering life’s calling.
A standout moment of the ceremony was the conferral of the university’s first doctoral degrees in partnership with B. H. Carroll Theological Seminary. This milestone represents a significant step in expanding graduate education at ETBU.
The event also recognized the inaugural graduates of the MavPATH Program. Launched in 2023, this initiative aims to assist Marshall ISD paraprofessionals in earning their bachelor’s degrees, responding to the urgent demand for qualified teachers in Texas. Dr. Thomas Sanders, the provost, highlighted the transformative impact this program will have on both individuals and their communities.
U.S. Senator John Cornyn delivered an inspiring commencement address, encouraging graduates to rely on their faith. He urged them to be open to unexpected paths that life may take, explaining that trusting in God brings peace and purpose.
Among the graduates, Baylie Colston received the prestigious President’s Award for her remarkable commitment to service and leadership. A nursing major, Baylie not only excelled academically but also actively participated in the community, showing her dedication to helping others.
Martha Dudley, a nursing professor, praised Baylie for her compassion and positive influence. She described Baylie as someone who listens and uplifts her peers while providing excellent care in patient settings.
This graduation ceremony marked not just a conclusion but a new beginning for these graduates as they step into a world ripe with possibilities. According to recent studies by the National Center for Education Statistics, the demand for educated professionals continues to rise, making the choices these graduates make now more important than ever.
