Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki al-Subaie, Qatar’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change, recently visited the 9th Katara International Hunting and Falcons Exhibition (S’hail 2025). During his visit, he recognized private breeders of the houbara bustard for their efforts in preserving this bird, which is at risk of extinction.
Dr. al-Subaie explored various exhibits focused on falconry and hunting. He also checked out two pavilions run by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC), where digital services aimed at improving environmental management were showcased.
This year, the MoECC changed its approach to promote environmental awareness and sustainability. Farhoud Hadi al-Hajri, from the MoECC’s Public Relations and Communications Department, highlighted key initiatives. For instance, the Natural Reserves Department’s pavilion featured online services linked to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) as part of a campaign to manage the Myna bird population.
Additionally, the State Protected Areas Office displayed Qatar’s commitment to breeding the houbara bustard, featuring educational activities like taxidermy showcases, live bird exhibits, and interactive 3D maps of breeding centers.
An exciting new addition was the Promising Falconer Passport aimed at younger generations. This initiative seeks to engage youth with the rich cultural heritage of falconry and encourage environmental stewardship.
Additional Insights
Recent studies show that falconry not only fosters cultural heritage but also aids in biodiversity conservation. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), sustainable hunting practices can positively impact both ecosystem health and local economies.
Social media trends reveal a growing interest in wildlife conservation, especially among younger audiences. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok have seen increased posts about conservation efforts, suggesting a shift in public awareness and engagement with ecological issues.
Emphasizing the importance of these initiatives, experts argue that sustainable practices in hunting and breeding can help combat species decline. As we continue to address environmental challenges, events like S’hail 2025 play a crucial role in uniting tradition with modern conservation efforts.
