Celebrating Diwali at 13,400 Feet: Sikkim Governor Joins Indian Army Soldiers at Doka La Pass

Gangtok: On Monday, Sikkim Governor Om Prakash Mathur celebrated Diwali with Indian Army soldiers at the high-altitude Doka La Pass, sitting at 13,400 feet. This location is historically significant due to the 2017 standoff between India and China.

During his address, Mathur praised the armed forces for their incredible bravery and dedication. He highlighted their inspiring spirit, especially in such challenging conditions. “The nation owes a debt of gratitude to our soldiers,” he said.

Doka La is the meeting point of India, China, and Bhutan. Mathur distributed sweets to the soldiers, expressing joy over the inclusion of Doka La, Nathu La, and Cho La in the battlefield tourism program, Rannbhoomi Darshan. He believes this initiative will enhance tourism in Sikkim while fostering a sense of pride and nationalism among the youth.

“I encourage everyone, especially the youth, to visit Doka La. It’s a place rich in history and a reminder of our soldiers’ sacrifices,” Mathur remarked. He believes such visits can strengthen patriotism while boosting the state’s tourism sector.

The governor also stopped at Sherathang Helipad and Dichu village to greet locals and share sweets. He visited Gnathang, another border village, continuing his interaction and Diwali wishes with local residents.

Recent surveys show that over 70% of young people believe in the importance of knowing their country’s military history. This interest can drive them to places like Doka La, where they can better understand their heritage. Celebrating festivals like Diwali with the armed forces not only honors their sacrifices but also encourages community bonds.

As India continues to recognize its military’s contributions, events like these serve as vital reminders of unity and pride in the nation.
