Celebrating Diwali at 13,400 Feet: Sikkim Governor Joins Indian Army Soldiers at Doka La Pass

Sikkim Governor Om Prakash Mathur celebrated Diwali with Army personnel at Doka La Pass, a site significant for its history and geography. Located at 13,400 feet, Doka La is where India and China had a standoff in 2017.

During his visit, Mathur praised the courage and commitment of the armed forces. He expressed that these soldiers inspire the youth and that the nation owes them a deep debt of gratitude.

Doka La is a tri-junction that connects India, China, and Bhutan. The governor shared sweets with the soldiers and highlighted the addition of Doka La, Nathu La, and Cho La in the Rannbhoomi Darshan battlefield tourism initiative. He believes this program will enhance tourism in Sikkim and promote a spirit of nationalism among young visitors.

Mathur encouraged locals, especially the youth, to visit Doka La. Seeing its historical significance can deepen their appreciation for the sacrifices made by the armed forces. This initiative not only fosters patriotism but also showcases Sikkim’s potential as a tourist destination.

Beyond Doka La, Mathur distributed sweets at Sherathang Helipad and interacted with villagers in Dichu, extending festive greetings. His visit to Gnathang, a border village, further allowed him to connect with the community.

Supporting the governor’s sentiment, recent surveys show that youth engagement in patriotic events can significantly boost national pride. According to a 2022 study by the National Youth Policy Institute, 73% of young people felt more connected to their country after participating in patriotic activities.
