On May 3, Alvernia University held its Student Leadership Recognition Luncheon, celebrating 18 exceptional students at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Reading. This annual event honors students who make a significant impact both in and out of the classroom.
These honorees play crucial roles on campus. Some serve as Golden Guides and Resident Assistants, while others engage in community service through initiatives like Holleran Corps or the Reading Youth Initiative. They also lead with compassion as Alternative Break Leaders and provide support as peer tutors and mentors. Many are active in the Student Government Association, International Student Ambassador program, and Interfaith initiatives.
University President Glynis A. Fitzgerald emphasized that leadership at Alvernia extends beyond titles. “It’s about relationships, compassion, and action,” she said. This transformational leadership model is evident in how students choose to uplift one another daily.
Registered Student Organizations also received accolades for their valuable contributions. Awards highlighted their leadership skills, service, and ability to foster engagement among students. “We recognize those who go the extra mile,” said Kaleigh Pelko, Director of New Student Programs. “Their passion and commitment to integrity inspire us all.”
Many students being honored were involved in academic and residential life, including peer tutors and mentors. The ceremony featured the Core Value Leadership Awards, which spotlight students embodying Alvernia’s Franciscan values: humility, peacemaking, collegiality, contemplation, and service.
Among the awards, the Community Service Project of the Year went to the Alvernia Dance Company for their impactful work with First Fridays at The Heritage of Green Hills. The Event of the Year award was given to the Carnival for All, hosted by the Education Association, for creating an inclusive space for families in the Berks County community. The Disciplemakers were named Registered Student Organization of the Year for their strong community ties. Finally, Jessica Warchal King received the Advisor of the Year Award for her dedication to the Alvernia Dance Company.
These recognitions not only celebrate individual achievements but also reflect the commitment to building a supportive and engaging campus community. It’s clear that the spirit of leadership thrives at Alvernia, encouraging students to lead with purpose.
