Celebrating Excellence: Announcing the 2025 Thomas S. Thompson Award Winners and Employee Honors at Morningside University!

Morningside University recently celebrated its commitment to excellence by awarding the 2025 Thomas S. Thompson Staff Excellence Awards. This year’s recipients included five outstanding individuals: Pastor Andy Nelson, Jason Reynoldson, Allysen Van Ginkel, Katie Koithan, and Dennis Gonzales, who also earned the title of Employee of the Year.

These awards recognize staff who show exceptional dedication to the university and its students. Winners receive a cash bonus, funded by an endowment in memory of Thomas S. Thompson, who served as the university president from 1969 to 1978.

Spotlight on Excellence

Pastor Andy Nelson has been a vital part of Morningside since 2017. He stands out for providing support that goes beyond expectations. Whether addressing food insecurity or creating safe environments, Andy has made a meaningful impact on campus life.

Jason Reynoldson joined Morningside in 2021. His creative problem-solving and dedication shine through in every project. Recently, he played a significant role in installing the new Mustang statue, enhancing the campus atmosphere.

Allysen Van Ginkel ‘19, who started as an admissions counselor in 2021, has made waves with her relationship-driven approach. This year, her efforts exceeded recruitment expectations, helping bring record numbers of new students to Morningside.

Katie Koithan has been with Morningside since 2015 and has recently taken the lead on initiatives to support students, especially during transitions. Her compassionate leadership fosters a supportive campus culture driven by empathy.

Dennis Gonzales, also a 2021 hire, was named Employee of the Year for his reliable and friendly approach. Whether navigating IT changes or offering support, Dennis’s influence spans many departments, contributing to a smoothly running operation.

Honoring Years of Service

Morningside also recognized employees for their years of service:

  • Five years: Kelly Chaney, Brooke Daane, Kelli Flack, and others.
  • Ten years: Karrie Alvarez, Katy Burford, and several more.
  • Fifteen years: Aaron Bunker, David Elder, and others.
  • Twenty years: Stacie Hays, Andre McWell, and more.
  • Twenty-five years: Regina Bade and Stephanie Peters.
  • Thirty years: Randy Campbell.
  • Thirty-five years: Jack Hill.

These awards highlight the importance of dedication and service in creating a vibrant community. According to a recent survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, workplaces that recognize and celebrate employee achievements report higher satisfaction and retention rates. This reinforces that honoring staff not only boosts morale but contributes to the overall success of the institution.
