Celebrating Excellence: Boone County Math Teacher Honored for Inspiring Classroom Impact

Jenna Stewart, a fifth-grade math teacher at Longbranch Elementary School, recently experienced a thrilling surprise during a school assembly. She thought she was just attending a talk by Kentucky’s Commissioner of Education, Robbie Fletcher. Instead, she was honored with the prestigious Milken Educator Award.

Milken Educator Awards Senior Vice President Jane Foley told the crowd, “Educators have the most important job in our society,” before revealing that Stewart was the award recipient. The room erupted in cheers from students and staff alike as Stewart processed the news.

“I was shocked,” Stewart said, laughing about the moment. She credits her colleagues and students for her success, acknowledging their support. “I couldn’t be the teacher I am without the incredible team at Longbranch,” she said. Stewart’s dedication goes beyond just teaching math; she aims to connect with her students on a personal level, helping them realize their potential.

Foley praised Stewart’s efforts: “She shapes the minds of her students, inspiring them to reach their full potential.” This recognition is not just an award; it also includes a $25,000 cash prize that Stewart can use to further her educational mission.

Stewart is known for her commitment to fostering a supportive and engaging learning environment. She has led initiatives like “Girls on the Run,” a program that encourages young girls to grow in confidence and set achievable goals, culminating in a 5K run. This involvement showcases her dedication to her students’ development outside of the classroom.

Her leadership extends into the community too. Stewart has chaired a Student Job Committee that helps students find employment opportunities. She leads the school’s Lighthouse Team, focusing on student involvement in daily school activities, which promotes leadership skills.

Additionally, Stewart actively engages with her students’ families. She holds informal “porch pop-ins” to meet with students at home and regularly attends their extracurricular events. This commitment to building relationships fosters a deep sense of community.

In her district, Stewart has played a crucial role in revising the math curriculum for around 20,000 students. She serves on various committees aimed at improving education standards and practices.

Stewart graduated from the University of Kentucky with a bachelor’s in elementary education in 2014 and recently completed her master’s in school counseling. Her leadership style is quiet yet effective. Fletcher remarked on her ability to build strong relationships, noting the emotional bond her students have with her. Many students were visibly moved upon hearing she won the award, highlighting the impact she has made.
