DePauw University held its annual awards ceremony on May 2, celebrating the outstanding contributions of faculty members. This event highlighted their dedication to education, their commitment to students, and their impact on the university community.
One of the most prestigious honors, the Mr. and Mrs. Fred C. Tucker Jr. Distinguished Career Award, recognizes faculty who have significantly impacted DePauw. This year, Melanie Finney, professor emerita of communication and theatre, received the award. President Lori S. White praised Finney for being a guiding light and a fierce advocate for students. She described Finney as a dedicated educator who has always stepped up in challenging times.
Another notable recognition was the United Methodist Exemplary Teacher of the Year Award, awarded to Lori Miles, professor of art and art history. This award honors faculty who exemplify excellent teaching and commitment to students and the community. According to Bridget Gourley, the dean of the faculty, Miles collaborates with students on summer projects and engages with the local community, which fosters dialogue and learning beyond the classroom.
The G. Bromley Oxnam Endowed Award for Service went to John Berry, the John Rabb Emison Professor of Creative and Performing Arts. This award celebrates mid-career faculty who contribute significantly to the university and the broader community. Vice President Dave Berque highlighted Berry’s involvement in numerous committees, emphasizing his positive impact on students and the institution.
Retiring faculty members were also honored for their years of dedication to DePauw, including Ron Dye, Caroline Gilson, Clarissa Peterson, David Harvey, and Howard Brooks.
These awards reflect a growing trend in higher education where universities are not just focusing on research, but also on the transformative role of teaching and service. According to a recent survey by the American Association of University Professors, 80% of students believe that faculty interactions greatly enhance their college experience. This further underscores the importance of recognizing and celebrating dedicated educators like those at DePauw University.
Overall, the ceremony was a reminder of the vital roles faculty play in shaping not only students’ futures but also the values and community spirit within academic institutions.
