Celebrating Excellence: Duke University’s Williams and Winegar Named All-Americans!

DURHAM, N.C. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) has just revealed its final rankings for the season. Duke’s doubles team of sophomore Cooper Williams and graduate Theo Winegar finished third in the nation and earned All-America honors.

To achieve this distinction, teams must rank in the top 10. This recognition continues a trend for the Blue Devils. Last year, Garrett Johns and Pedro Rodenas also received the same accolade.

Williams and Winegar showcased impressive performance throughout the season, achieving a record of 9-2 in dual matches. They finished strong, winning all six matches against ranked opponents and ending the season on a six-match unbeaten streak.

Their postseason was particularly noteworthy. In the ACC Championship, they triumphed over notable teams, including a 6-4 win against Notre Dame’s Sebastian Dominko and Chase Thompson, a 6-4 victory against NC State’s Braden Shick and Fons Van Sambeek, and a decisive 6-2 win against Stanford’s Nico Godsick and Hudson Rivera. They capped off their season with a 6-3 victory over the ninth-ranked duo of Alex Kotzen and Alejandro Moreno from Tennessee.

In the world of college tennis, strong teamwork is essential. According to a recent survey from the ITA, nearly 80% of college tennis coaches emphasize the importance of doubles play in shaping a team’s overall success. This statistic highlights how essential partnerships like Williams and Winegar’s can be in achieving a standout season.
