The University of Nebraska Foundation recently honored two Kearney couples for their outstanding service to the university. Galen and Marilyn Hadley, along with Tom and Mary Henning, received special awards during a celebration in Kearney.
Galen and Marilyn Hadley: Harlan J. Noddle Award
Galen and Marilyn Hadley were presented with the Harlan J. Noddle Award for Distinguished Development Service. This award recognizes individuals who have shown exceptional commitment to the university and its mission. The Hadleys’ connection to Nebraska runs deep; they met at the University of Nebraska and have strong ties to its community.
Marilyn served for 28 years at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, finishing her career as the Dean of the College of Education. Galen also held significant roles, including serving as the Dean of the College of Business and Technology and as a member of the Nebraska Legislature from 2009 to 2017.
In 2012, Galen played a vital role in advancing legislative initiatives that benefited health education in Nebraska. His work led to the creation of notable facilities, including the Douglas A. Kristensen Rural Health Education Complex. Marilyn, since her retirement, has been active in community service, focusing on education and the arts.
University President Jeffrey P. Gold praised the Hadleys, saying they are devoted advocates for higher education and the future of Nebraska.
Tom and Mary Henning: Perry W. Branch Award
Tom and Mary Henning received the Perry W. Branch Award for Distinguished Volunteer Service. This award honors those who have significantly contributed to the university’s mission through their volunteer efforts.
Tom, a Kearney native, graduated from the University of Nebraska after starting his education at UNK. He leads Cash-Wa Distributing Co., a family business. Mary studied education at UNK and has a passion for teaching and the arts.
The Hennings have been active as trustees since 1992, contributing to various campaigns that support the university’s future. Tom has served on many committees and helped establish the One Nebraska Coalition to promote university initiatives.
Brian F. Hastings, president and CEO of the University of Nebraska Foundation, commended the Hennings for their extensive volunteer contributions and commitment to enhancing the university’s presence in Nebraska.
Community Impact
These couples exemplify community service and dedication. Their efforts not only support the university but also inspire others in Nebraska to get involved. Recent studies show that active local leaders increase community engagement and support for education significantly. For instance, research shows that areas with strong educational initiatives see a 25% increase in local job growth.
As we look at these awards and the contributions of the Hadleys and Hennings, it’s clear that their impact extends beyond the university. They are leaders and role models, showcasing how commitment to education can change lives and communities.
