Gannon University Honors Student-Athletes of the Week
Gannon University has chosen two standout athletes for the week of November 9. Patrick Jackson, a wrestler, and Mariia Melnyk, a swimmer, have both made impressive achievements this season.
Patrick Jackson shines on the men’s wrestling team. At the Bob Del Rosa Ohio Open, he competed in the 184-pound class and secured his second first-place win of the season. Jackson, a redshirt sophomore, is now undefeated with a record of 7-0. Notably, he won his quarterfinal match 7-1, then dominated the semifinals with a 19-3 technical fall. He clinched the championship after his opponent had to forfeit due to injury.
On the women’s swimming side, Mariia Melnyk earned recognition for her remarkable performance. The freshman from Kyiv, Ukraine, set a new Gannon record in the 100-yard freestyle, achieving a time of 50.80, which meets NCAA-B qualifications. Not only did she excel in the freestyle, but she also won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.46. Melnyk played a crucial role in the 400-yard medley relay, contributing to another record-setting relay performance.
Both athletes exemplify hard work and talent, bringing pride to Gannon University. Their accomplishments highlight the competitive spirit within Gannon’s athletic community and set a high bar for future athletes.
As interest in college athletics grows, it’s fascinating to look at how student-athletes balance sports and academics. According to a recent NCAA study, about 70% of college athletes report stress due to the dual demands of competing at a high level and managing their coursework. This makes Jackson and Melnyk’s achievements even more impressive.
