ORLANDO, Fla. – This week, the Sunshine State Conference celebrated two standout athletes from the Sharks. Ross Reeves received the title of Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, while Emilia Ronningdal was named Women’s Swimmer of the Week.
Reeves, from Orem, Utah, had an impressive week, leading the Sharks to victories over Saint Leo University and No. 4 Palm Beach Atlantic University. He scored 17 points with four assists and four rebounds in a game against Saint Leo. Later, he scored a remarkable 33 points against the highly ranked Sailfish, assisting six times and grabbing seven rebounds. This achievement marks Reeves’ fifth weekly honor this season.
Ronningdal, originally from Hässleholm, Sweden, shined on the Sharks’ Senior Day, competing against Barry University, No. 14 Florida Southern, and the University of Miami. She outpaced her competitors in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:03.21, winning by over a second. She also triumphed in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:02.36. This award is her first this season and the second in her career.
Looking ahead, both athletes will be back in action soon. The men’s basketball team is set to face Eckerd College on January 28 at 7:30 PM. Meanwhile, the swim team is gearing up for the Sunshine State Conference Championships, scheduled for February 11-15 in Ocala.
Recent studies indicate that collegiate sports play a critical role in developing teamwork and leadership skills among students. According to the NCAA, students who participate in athletics tend to maintain higher GPAs compared to their non-athletic peers, emphasizing the balance of academics and sports.
