On Friday, Sastra University in Thanjavur celebrated National Science Day by honoring five outstanding professors for their remarkable contributions to science.
Dr. K. Radhakrishnan, former chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), was the chief guest. He emphasized that the youth hold the key to making India a developed nation by 2047. He highlighted the importance of nurturing intellectual property within India to transform knowledge into wealth.
During the event, Dr. Radhakrishnan presented several prestigious awards: the Sastra-CNR Rao award and the Sastra-GN Ramachandran award, among others. The recipients were:
- M. Palaniandavar from Bharathidasan University
- Tarun Souradeep from the Raman Research Institute
- N.G. Prasad from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Mohali
- B. Mahadevan from the Indian Institute of Management, Bengaluru
Each award includes a plaque and a cash prize of ₹5 lakhs. Additionally, the Sastra-Obaid Siddiqi award for 2024 was given to Uma Ramakrishnan from the National Centre for Biological Sciences.
S. Vaidhyasubramaniam, the vice-chancellor of Sastra University, welcomed attendees at the event. National Science Day, celebrated on February 28 each year, honors the anniversary of the discovery of the Raman effect by Sir C.V. Raman.
