Over 2,000 years ago, Jewish people fought for their freedom against oppressive forces. They won the right to worship and live by their beliefs. After their victory, they rededicated the Holy Temple. Legend has it that, although they had just enough oil for one night, the lamp burned for eight days. This miracle is why families light the menorah for eight nights, symbolizing light overcoming darkness and good triumphing over evil. Hanukkah is a time to give thanks for these miracles.
The menorah remains a powerful symbol of liberty. It echoes George Washington’s words to the Hebrew Congregation in Newport: everyone should feel safe and secure in their own homes.
