India is celebrating its remarkable athletes who returned from the Special Olympics 2025 in Turin, Italy, with an impressive haul of 33 medals. This event shines a light on the skills and determination of athletes with intellectual disabilities.
At a vibrant welcome ceremony held at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, government officials praised the athletes. The Hon’ble Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Smt. Raksha Khadse, highlighted their resilience. “Our athletes have made the country proud,” she said. “Their determination is inspiring.” Alongside her, Dr. Mallika Nadda, President of Special Olympics Bharat, applauded the champions, stating, “They have shattered barriers and proved that determination knows no limits.”
The Indian team, comprised of 30 athletes and 19 support staff, excelled in six sports: alpine skiing, snowboarding, floorball, snowshoeing, short track speed skating, and cross-country skiing. They secured a remarkable count of 8 gold, 18 silver, and 7 bronze medals. This achievement reflects the hard work and dedication these athletes put into their training.
In recognition of their success, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has announced increased cash rewards for medalists, with gold medalists receiving Rs. 20 lakhs, silver medalists Rs. 14 lakhs, and bronze medalists Rs. 8 lakhs.
