Ronnie Sloan has fostered a remarkable culture of compassion at OBH, impacting not just the staff but also patients and the wider community. This commitment is evident in OBH’s recognition as a 5-star hospital in North Carolina for patient satisfaction, according to Press Ganey.
Under his leadership, OBH was a pioneer in rural cancer care, significantly reducing mortality rates. The hospital became the first Dementia Friendly Hospital in North Carolina and achieved accredited stroke-ready status. Sloan expanded crucial health services in the Outer Banks, including urgent care, family medicine, urology, cardiology, orthopedics, and cancer care.
Sloan has dedicated his career to improving the quality of life for Dare County residents and visitors. He has cultivated strong partnerships with ECU Health and CRH, promoting a shared mission of integrity and dedicated healthcare.
Van Smith, Jr., president of ECU Health community hospitals, praised Sloan’s immeasurable influence on the region, saying, “His work has set a lasting tone for future healthcare leaders.” Recognized nationally in 2018 with the American Hospital Association Rural Health Leadership Award, Sloan exemplifies leadership that drives transformational change and enhances healthcare access.
Beyond OBH, he has volunteered with several nonprofits, including the North Carolina Aquarium Society and the Outer Banks Community Foundation. His efforts extend into local development, impacting areas such as housing and healthcare accessibility.
Myra Ladd-Bone, chair of OBH’s Board of Directors, expressed gratitude for Sloan’s distinguished career. “His legacy will continue to benefit the people of eastern North Carolina for years to come,” she said.
Sloan will retire in early 2026, with plans to find a successor who shares the community’s values. The Board seeks a leader ready to embrace the commitment to compassion, integrity, and exceptional care that Sloan established.
