Chandigarh: Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh recently bid farewell to the MiG-21 fighter jets at the Chandigarh Air Force Station. He emphasized that these jets, symbols of India-Russia friendship, played a crucial role in the Indian Air Force since their introduction in the early 1960s.
“These jets have excelled even in tough situations,” Singh noted. He pointed out their pivotal involvement in significant events like the 1971 war with Pakistan. The MiG-21s brought honor to the nation and bolstered India’s defense capabilities.
The ceremony marked the end of the MiG-21s’ operational journey, specifically honoring the 23rd Squadron, known as the “Panthers.” Air Chief Marshal A. P. Singh flew the final mission with a call sign ‘Badal 3,’ and notable former IAF chiefs were also present.
The event featured spectacular performances from the IAF’s elite skydiving team, ‘Akash Ganga,’ along with a dramatic flypast of MiG-21s and stunning displays by the Surya Kiran aerobatic team. These moments resonated with the audience, showcasing a legacy of air excellence.
The MiG-21 has been a cornerstone of India’s air defense, with over 870 units purchased since its debut. It played vital roles in the 1965 and 1971 wars and was pivotal in the 1999 Kargil conflict and the 2019 Balakot strikes.
As the IAF reflected on social media, the MiG-21 had indeed woven countless stories of bravery into the fabric of our nation’s aviation history. Its legacy is one of pride, perseverance, and a testament to the skill of generations of Indian pilots.
In a survey by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), 65% of respondents highlighted the MiG-21 as an iconic representation of India’s military might. As we say goodbye to this legendary aircraft, we acknowledge the memories it leaves behind.
