YOUNGSTOWN — On October 24, the Mahoning County Mental Health and Recovery Board celebrated local police officers who completed their Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) program. This ceremony took place at the Public Library of Youngstown.
This year, the training honored officers from several departments, including:
- Beaver Police Department: Officer Jordan Wilkeson
- Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office: Sgt. Anthony Lucas, Deputy Daniel Medvec, Deputy Marc Ruse
- Sebring Police Department: Patrolman Dillon Vesey
- Smith Township Police Department: Officer Bryan Francis
The CIT program is a 40-hour course designed to help law enforcement connect better with mental health professionals and those in crisis. It aims to enhance safety for officers and the community when addressing mental health situations. This year marks the 25th anniversary of CIT in Ohio.
Thanks to the efforts of the Board and NAMI, all police departments in Mahoning County have at least one officer trained in CIT. This graduation reflects a significant step for the community, highlighting the importance of mental health in law enforcement.
Recent data shows that mental health crises have surged in the past decade, making training like CIT crucial. According to a study from the National Institute of Mental Health, nearly 1 in 5 adults experienced mental illness in 2021, indicating the need for more trained officers nationwide. Experts argue that improving mental health response can lead to better outcomes for everyone involved.
The impact of CIT goes beyond just the officers. It helps create a bridge between law enforcement and community members, fostering trust and understanding. With more officers understanding mental health issues, there’s a greater chance for effective communication and de-escalation during crises.
