Celebrating Social Justice: NMSU Public Health Professor Receives J. Paul Taylor Award – Join Us for the Final Events Tonight!

This year’s Social Justice Award from New Mexico State University (NMSU) was awarded to Professor Jagdish Khubchandani from the Department of Public Health Sciences. The award ceremony opened the 2025 J. Paul Taylor Social Justice Symposium, held from April 29 to May 1.

Neil Harvey, head of the government department, presented the award. Each year, this honor recognizes an NMSU member—faculty, staff, or student—who actively works toward creating a more equitable society.

Khubchandani emphasized, “Health should be a right, not a privilege. Until we achieve health equity, our efforts focus on uplifting those affected by poor health and limited opportunities.” He dedicated his award to NMSU staff who support his mission for justice and better health.

With expertise in epidemiology and environmental health, Khubchandani has vast experience in community engagement. His dedication led to the Indiana Governor’s Service Learning Award in 2012 for his service work.

Neil Harvey praised Khubchandani’s contributions, particularly his research on gun violence, public health issues, and the COVID-19 vaccine rollout. “He works to promote social justice while fostering understanding among diverse groups,” Harvey noted. “He truly deserves this recognition.”

The symposium’s final evening on May 1 features a mixer followed by presentations. NMSU Professor Spencer Hererra will share insights on storytelling and community connection, while Phame Camarena, dean of the William Conroy Honors College, will discuss the significance of higher education in 2025 and beyond. Audience engagement will follow the talks.
