On May 14, Indiana University Northwest celebrated its 59th annual commencement ceremony, marking a special day for nearly 600 graduates. This gathering was a heartfelt send-off for the Class of 2025.
This class stands out for its diversity. Almost half of the graduates belong to underrepresented minorities, the highest in the Indiana University system. Additionally, around 30% are first-generation college graduates. Notably, Indiana University Northwest also led in the percentage of Hispanic/Latino and African American graduates among all Indiana University campuses.
The success of these graduates reflects Indiana University Northwest’s commitment to providing quality education and opportunities to its community. Academic Advisor Erika Daniels expressed pride in her students’ achievements. “It’s incredible to see them reach this point after so much hard work,” she said. “It truly feels good.”
The ceremony started with remarks from Indiana University President Pamela Whitten and Interim Chancellor Vicki Román-Lagunas. They highlighted the transformative journey each student had undertaken, emphasizing that graduation is just the first step into a wider world.
Román-Lagunas encouraged graduates to dream big and make a difference, stating, “You now join a community of thinkers and changemakers.” This moment wasn’t just about wearing a cap and gown; it was about stepping into a larger mission.
One of the graduates, Elgis Streeter, shared his journey from pursuing a bachelor’s degree to earning an MBA while working as the director of alumni engagement at the university. Streeter’s connection to Indiana University Northwest runs deep. “It was local, and it provided me growth and connections,” he explained. His story illustrates how education can change lives and strengthen communities.
During his speech, Streeter reminded everyone that they now belong to a large, supportive network of over 790,000 alumni. “We are all here to enhance the reputation of Indiana University,” he said, signifying the impact graduates can have on the world.
In total, Indiana University Northwest awarded 24 associate degrees, 472 bachelor’s degrees, and 90 master’s degrees, equipping students with vital skills and knowledge. The university’s focus on education goes beyond simply handing out diplomas; it aims to empower students to make meaningful contributions.
Chancellor Román-Lagunas delivered a rallying message: “This is your call to action. Use your education and heart to create a just and united world. Dream boldly and lead with compassion.”
Data from the National Center for Education Statistics show that college graduation rates significantly benefit local economies, fostering innovation and creating jobs. As graduates of Indiana University Northwest venture into their careers, they carry this potential to transform their communities.
