The U.S. Central Command, which directs military operations in the Middle East, has a new chief technology officer: Joy Angela Shanaberger.
Previously a senior adviser to Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks, Shanaberger stepped into her new role at Centcom in Tampa, Florida, last month. She expressed her enthusiasm on LinkedIn, saying she is excited to work with her team in the “sunshine state” to accomplish significant goals together.
As CTO, Shanaberger will help promote innovative technologies that can benefit the military. Central Command is not just focused on countering terrorist threats and the Iranian military; it is also a testing ground for cutting-edge technologies. This includes unmanned systems, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and counter-drone technology, often under initiatives like Task Force 59 and others.
Shanaberger takes over from Schuyler Moore, the inaugural CTO, who is now working in intelligence for U.S. Naval Forces Europe in Italy. Shanaberger thanked Moore for her contributions and laid the groundwork for future success.
Shanaberger founded a tech company named Boone, aimed at speeding up technology deployment for defense and intelligence sectors. She also served as a special assistant in the Department of Defense during the Obama administration.
