Cervantes Shines with Third Place Finish at Thunderbolt: Highlights from Marquette University Athletics

Marquette sophomore Vincent Cervantes made quite an impression at The Thunderbolt tournament, finishing tied for third with an impressive 7-under par 206. This three-round event took place at the picturesque Sterling Grove Country Club in Surprise, Arizona.

Cervantes, originally from Chandler, Arizona, started with a shaky 1-over 71 in the first round. However, he quickly turned things around with a stellar 6-under in round two, scoring seven birdies along the way.

In the final round, he maintained his momentum, finishing with a solid 69 after shooting 2-under on the back nine. He ended just two strokes behind Middle Tennessee State’s Connor Henry, who finished strong with a final round score of 65.

The Thunderbolt is a newer addition to the golf calendar, launched in 2022 following the success of The Patriot All-America Invitational. This tournament gives 72 of the nation’s top male collegiate players a chance to compete on the same dates as The Patriot. Named after the historic Air Force P-47 Thunderbolt, it was created to accommodate players who qualified but didn’t make it into the first tournament.

Golf participation has been steadily increasing in recent years. According to the National Golf Foundation, there were 24.3 million golfers in the U.S. in 2021, a high point since the onset of the pandemic. This surge in interest among younger players helps to underscore events like The Thunderbolt, as they provide important competitive opportunities and can inspire the next generation of golfers.
