Chad Bumphis Returns to Utah Football as Wide Receivers Coach
Chad Bumphis is back with the Utah football team as the new wide receivers coach, as announced by head coach Morgan Scalley. Bumphis previously held this role for the Utes during the 2021-2022 seasons. For the last three years, he has been coaching at Mississippi State, his alma mater.
Scalley expressed enthusiasm about Bumphis’s return, noting his passion and energy for coaching. “He’s an exceptional recruiter and evaluator,” Scalley said. Many players appreciate Bumphis’s ability to teach and guide them effectively.
During his time at Mississippi State, Bumphis played a key role in the development of standout players like Brenen Thompson, who earned All-SEC honors. In the recent season, Thompson recorded impressive stats, including 53 receptions for 948 yards and six touchdowns. He topped the SEC with nine receptions of 40 or more yards.
Bumphis also helped Kevin Coleman Jr. achieve significant recognition, marking him as the first Bulldog wide receiver to earn All-SEC honors since 2016. Coleman finished with 74 receptions for 932 yards and six touchdowns, ranking highly in the conference.
In his prior role with the Utes, Bumphis guided a wide receiver unit that contributed to Utah’s impressive offensive standing, ranking fifth in the Pac-12 for both scoring and total offense. Key players like Devaughn Vele and Britain Covey thrived under his mentorship.
Bumphis’s coaching journey has been noteworthy. Before his coaching career, he played professionally for the Miami Dolphins and spent time with several teams, including a stint in the Canadian Football League.
Throughout his collegiate playing days, Bumphis excelled at Mississippi State, holding records for receiving touchdowns and ranking high in career receiving yards. His performance earned him several accolades, including a place on the Freshman All-SEC team.
As he returns to Utah, Bumphis shared his excitement about rejoining the program. “My family and I are thrilled to be back in Salt Lake City,” he said. He looks forward to working with a promising group of wide receivers and contributing to the team’s success.
