In response to the urgent nursing shortage in the Midwest, Chamberlain University and SSM Health have launched an innovative initiative called the Aspiring Nurse Program. This program aims to train and place over 400 nurses each year across four states.
Kicking off this fall in Oklahoma, the program addresses the increasing demand for nurses while providing a long-term solution to workforce challenges. Laura S. Kaiser, President & CEO of SSM Health, emphasized the need for bold solutions to this ongoing issue. “The Aspiring Nurse Program is a thoughtful investment in our future and a response to current healthcare challenges,” she said.
This program offers tuition support for students enrolled in Chamberlain’s online Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program. In return for funding, graduates commit to working at SSM Health. They will gain hands-on experience through clinical training at SSM facilities in Missouri, Oklahoma, Illinois, and Wisconsin.
This partnership fosters collaboration between educational institutions and healthcare providers. Steve Beard, CEO of Chamberlain’s parent company, Adtalem Global Education, noted that this approach could strengthen workforce stability and ensure graduates are prepared from day one.
Chamberlain University, which has evolved from its origins as Deaconess College of Nursing, has grown to become the largest nursing school in the U.S. It focuses on values-driven education. Amy Wilson, SSM Health’s Chief Nurse Executive, highlighted that this program not only prepares students but also contributes to better patient care in local communities.
The first group of students is set to start in September 2025, with more locations planned in St. Louis and Jefferson City, as well as in Illinois and Wisconsin. Karen Cox, President of Chamberlain University, emphasized the importance of expanding the nursing workforce for community health.
According to recent studies, the U.S. faces a nursing shortage of over one million by 2030, driven by an aging population and retiring nurses. This program can play a crucial role in meeting that demand.
