Singer Chantal Kreviazuk stirred things up during the 4 Nations Face-Off championship game between the US and Canada. She changed the lyrics to “O Canada,” which added to the ongoing tension between the two countries.
Instead of singing “in all of us command,” she opted for “that only us command.” She later shared a photo of her altered lyric on her hand via Instagram.
Kreviazuk’s publicist explained that her change was a response to President Donald Trump’s remarks about making Canada the 51st state of the US. The alteration was a form of protest against such comments.
In her Instagram post, Kreviazuk expressed her feelings about the current situation between Canada and the US. She emphasized the importance of using art as a way to voice truth. She stated, “We must stand up and try to protect ourselves.”
She further added, “Canada, like Ukraine, is a sovereign nation. We are united in our values. We care, we’re kind, and we are strong.” Her stance reflects the pride many Canadians feel about their culture and independence.
Trump has consistently suggested that Canada should be part of the US, making critical remarks towards Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and threatening tariffs that could hurt Canada’s economy.

Recently, “The Star-Spangled Banner” has faced backlash in Canada, being booed at various hockey games. Similar incidents occurred before the first game of the 4 Nations Face-Off.
Although “O Canada” faced some boos before Thursdays’ game, by the end, a large part of the crowd joined in singing.
Canada emerged victorious with a 3-2 win in overtime, claiming the title in this new midseason tournament hosted by the NHL.
After the game, Kreviazuk celebrated by posting a picture of herself with a fist pump, captioning it, “and justice prevails.”
Trudeau reiterated the situation between the US and Canada, defending the nation’s sovereignty in a post-game message.
