EXCLUSIVE: Just two months before the start of a high-profile trial, Sean “Diddy” Combs’ defense team is facing challenges. One of his lead lawyers, Anthony Ricco, has asked to withdraw from the case.
Ricco’s request to Judge Arun Subramanian shows a defense team struggling with internal issues. Sources suggest there’s been tension and a lack of direction within the group. “They’re desperate to avoid trial,” one attorney shared. “They’re throwing out various strategies and hoping something works.”
Ricco’s withdrawal request lacks specific reasons, citing “protections afforded by the attorney/client privilege.” In his statement, he expressed regret, saying he can’t effectively represent Diddy any longer. Despite his departure, he indicated that the trial should still proceed as planned.
Currently, Diddy is in the Metropolitan Detention Center following his arrest on September 16. His defense team, led by Marc Agnifilo and Teny Geragos, has been unable to secure his release on a $50 million bail. Diddy’s trial is set for May 5, where he faces serious charges, including racketeering and sex trafficking.
In another legal battle, Diddy recently filed a $100 million lawsuit against NBCUniversal. He claims that the documentary *Diddy: Making of a Bad Boy* is filled with falsehoods. Just days ago, a civil case against him and Jay-Z was dropped by the plaintiff, a woman who alleged they raped her as a teenager in 2000. In response to the ongoing legal troubles, Diddy’s defense team has also accused prosecutors of applying “racist” laws against him.
Amid these controversies, insiders suggest that losing Ricco doesn’t impact Diddy’s legal team significantly. A source insisted that the team remains strong, with Agnifilo and Geragos still leading the defense.
As Ricco’s request awaits approval from the judge, it highlights ongoing issues within Combs’ legal strategy. Recently, prosecutors have pushed back against a motion from the defense seeking the identification of alleged victims in the indictment. They claimed the request is merely a tactic to delay the trial.
Diddy’s legal troubles go beyond the criminal trial. He is also fighting numerous civil lawsuits involving accusations of assault and abuse from various individuals connected to his past parties. Most of these cases are represented by lawyer Tony Buzbee, including the recent suit involving the Jane Doe who accused Diddy and Jay-Z of rape at the 2000 MTV VMAs, which has since been dropped.
