Character.ai, a popular chatbot platform launched in 2021, is altering its features for under-18 users following serious criticisms. Recently, the platform announced that from November 25, teens will no longer be able to engage in conversations with chatbots; instead, they can only create content like videos. This shift comes amidst pressure from parents, safety experts, and regulations due to concerns about risky interactions between children and chatbots.
The changes aim to protect younger users from potential harm. Experts have warned that AI chatbots can create misleading information and feign emotions, which may confuse vulnerable teens. Karandeep Anand, the CEO of Character.ai, emphasized that they are focused on fostering a safe environment for entertainment, saying safety in AI is continuously evolving.
Online safety advocates have welcomed the change but argued it should have been in place from the start. Research from Internet Matters indicates that children often encounter harmful content when using AI chatbots. In fact, past incidents on the platform included chatbots mimicking tragic figures, raising significant alarms about the content available to minors.
In response to previous controversies, like the discovery of harmful chatbots impersonating real people involved in tragic events, Character.ai is now implementing new age verification methods and planning to establish an AI safety research lab.
Social media reactions highlight a growing concern for the emotional impact AI can have on young users. Matt Navarra, a social media expert, described the situation as a wake-up call for the AI industry, moving towards stricter regulations. He pointed out that the emotional connection created by chatbots can blur the lines of real relationships, making it crucial for developers to ensure safety without sacrificing engagement.
Dr. Nomisha Kurian, an AI safety researcher, praised the platform’s decision, stating that limiting conversations can help shape a healthier online experience for teens. This reflects a broader industry trend where child safety is increasingly emphasized as a priority in tech innovation.
Character.ai’s changes serve as a reminder of the delicate balance between innovation and safeguarding young users in an evolving digital landscape.
