Five Assumption University students were involved in a shocking incident that drew attention due to its alarming nature and the online "catch a predator" trend. Recently, charges of kidnapping and conspiracy against them were dropped, but two–Kelsy Brainard and Kevin Carroll–are still facing serious allegations.
The charges against Brainard include intimidating a witness, while Carroll faces assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Their legal representatives expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision to drop the more severe charges, indicating a belief in the students’ innocence and a desire to move past this incident.
On October 1, a 22-year-old U.S. Army soldier reported an encounter on campus that escalated quickly. He claimed he was lured by Brainard through Tinder under the impression that she was 18. When he agreed to meet, around 25 students confronted him, accusing him of being a predator. Things turned violent when he attempted to escape, and Carroll allegedly assaulted him. This situation was reportedly fueled by a trend on social media where individuals set up stings to catch supposed online predators in person.
Recent studies show that such interactions can be influenced by sensationalized media portrayals, with 60% of young people expressing concerns about online safety. They often draw from shows like To Catch a Predator, which has led many to believe they’re tackling a serious issue. However, experts caution that these actions can misinterpret the law and put individuals in danger, especially when misunderstandings arise.
