On July 15, 2025, Charlotte FC announced that forward Patrick Agyemang has officially joined Derby County in the English Championship for a record transfer fee. Charlotte FC will also retain a share of any future sale.

At just 24 years old, Agyemang was the 12th overall pick in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft. He quickly made a name for himself, scoring 22 goals in 72 matches for Charlotte FC and becoming the club’s second-highest all-time scorer, just behind Karol Swiderski. His recent success includes standing out in the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT), where he is the team’s top scorer this year and the only player to have appeared in all 12 matches of 2025.

“Patrick’s growth has caught the eye of many clubs in Europe,” said General Manager Zoran Krneta. He emphasized that this deal benefited both the club and the player. Agyemang is the first player from Charlotte FC’s development program to be sold for a multi-million-dollar fee.

Agyemang’s journey at Charlotte began impressively. After being selected from the SuperDraft, he scored 10 goals in just 11 matches for Crown Legacy FC, Charlotte’s MLS NEXT Pro team. This strong performance quickly led to his promotion to the first team. In a limited role during the 2023 season, he still managed to score twice, including a goal in the playoffs.

His first full season in MLS was noteworthy, with 10 goals and three assists across 36 games in 2024. His consistent performance earned him a call-up to the USMNT in January 2025. This year, he has continued to shine, scoring five goals for the national team and contributing eight goals and two assists for Charlotte in 18 matches.

Agyemang’s transition to Derby County highlights a growing trend in soccer: the move of young talent from the MLS to international clubs. Recent statistics show that in the last five years, MLS players have made over 50 transfers to European top leagues, reflecting the league’s rising reputation.
