Chartwells Higher Education is shaking things up in campus dining. On August 20, 2025, they unveiled “Blends and Bowls,” a new brand focused on smoothies. This change comes after a survey showed that 26% of students crave smoothies the most. Clearly, there’s a growing demand for quick and healthy food options.
Today’s students are busy—juggling classes, activities, and social lives. They want meals that provide quick energy and nutrition. Joe Labombarda, Senior VP of Culinary at Chartwells, noted the importance of student feedback in shaping their menu. He said, “Students want tasty foods that fuel their academics and athletics.” Blends and Bowls aims to offer just that: convenient, customizable smoothies and bowls made from fresh ingredients.
The menu includes exciting options, like Protein Cold Brew Coffee and the Tropical Greens smoothie, as well as vibrant acai bowls, such as the Coconut Dragon Fruit Smoothie Bowl. Each item is packed with nutrients to help students stay energized throughout their busy days.
Blends and Bowls debuted at Texas State University. Its success as a pop-up led to a nationwide rollout, even earning Texas State the National Retail Account of the Year Award from Chartwells. Dr. Bill Mattera, an Associate VP at the university, praised the initiative. He said, “The success of this concept shows how valuable it is to listen to student feedback.”
This push for healthier campus dining reflects a larger trend in food preferences. A recent study from the Food Institute revealed that more than 70% of consumers prefer meals that balance health with convenience. This is especially true for younger generations, who increasingly prioritize wellness.
The launch of Blends and Bowls is more than just a menu change; it’s a step toward making healthy eating accessible for students across the country. As Chartwells continues to expand its offerings, they reinforce the idea that listening to student needs leads to meaningful dining solutions.
