Chase Stokes Discusses Mental Health and Boundaries in the Spotlight
Chase Stokes is opening up about his journey with mental health. In a recent chat with PEOPLE, the 33-year-old actor shares how he’s managing his wellness while in the public eye. Known for his role in Netflix’s hit show Outer Banks, Stokes describes this ongoing process as an “ever-evolving battle.”
One important lesson he emphasizes is setting boundaries. He recalls that while he enjoys connecting with fans, he needs to remember that he’s more than just a character on a screen. “I’m not just a zoo animal,” he reflects. “I want genuine conversations, not just quick photos.”
The timing of Outer Banks was perfect; it gained popularity during the COVID-19 lockdown. Stokes believes the show became a comfort for many during that tough period. “People watched it countless times,” he notes. He understands their connection but wants them to know he’s a real person behind the character.
Looking ahead, Stokes prepares for a future filled with uncertainty as the fifth and final season of Outer Banks comes in 2026. He knows moving on from this chapter will be challenging but is ready for it. “Each day is a new journey,” he states. He’s been dedicated to weekly therapy, working to understand himself better.
Stokes is also committed to supporting mental health awareness. Through his partnership with Zenni Optical, he’s been involved in campaigns that promote mental wellness. Last year, he joined their Vision for Wellness campaign, which raised money for the nonprofit Bring Change to Mind, co-founded by Glenn Close. This organization focuses on mental health education, especially for youth.
He recalls a time when discussing mental health was often stigmatized. “People considered seeking help as a sign of weakness,” he says. Now, he aims to change that perception and encourage others to prioritize their mental well-being.
In a world where mental health struggles are becoming more recognized, Stokes is using his platform to destigmatize these conversations. By sharing his story, he hopes to inspire many to reach out for help and take their mental health seriously.
