On a chilly Saturday, the sound of Christmas music blended with the buzz of a busy assembly line at the Chattanooga Bakery. Volunteers filled the warehouse, packing over 5,000 food boxes for local families in need this holiday season.
“It’s a great way to build community,” said Laura Gardoski from Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church, watching the volunteers work. “It feels a bit like a barn raising.” This community-driven event, called Boxes of Blessing, started in Chattanooga in 2023. It originated from a similar initiative in San Antonio, Texas, led by Wil Nettleton and Benjie Slaton, who helped bring it to their city.
Nettleton, acting as the day’s emcee, announced progress as volunteers packed boxes. By 10:05 a.m., they had already filled 1,900 boxes. “During the holidays, many school-age children face food insecurity,” Nettleton explained. “Each box feeds a family of four for a week. While it won’t solve hunger, it shows our neighbors they aren’t alone.”
This effort goes beyond just serving food. It fosters unity among different groups. Nettleton noted, “It’s a day where we can come together across denominations and backgrounds.”
More than 10 organizations, including churches and nonprofits, participated. Stephanie Young, the missions coordinator at the church, remarked, “It’s incredible to see everyone come together in such an earnest way. This isn’t just about denominations; it’s about the community.”
Even children got involved, with some helping to sort massive boxes of pancake mix. Ansley Godwin from Grace+Peace Church mentioned how rewarding it was to see kids take part. “It’s fun to watch everyone working together,” she said, noting a little girl stacking boxes so she could help. “It’s a really special moment.”
Such community efforts are crucial, especially as food insecurity continues to rise. According to a recent study by Feeding America, over 34 million people in the U.S. struggle with hunger. Initiatives like Boxes of Blessing not only provide immediate support but also strengthen community bonds, reminding us that together, we can make a difference.
