Cheers to Updates: Exciting Beer News and Follow-Up Insights for Avid Enthusiasts

It’s May, and there’s a lot brewing in the beer world! Let’s dive into some updates and exciting new beers, plus a few insights and stats that paint a broader picture of what’s happening.

First up, let’s revisit Incandescent Brewing. This new brewery took over the former Hitchcock Brewing spot in Bernardston. Their taproom is now open and buzzing with activity! I recently sampled their German-style pilsner, Great Big World, and it surprised me. It’s a bit more bitter than typical German pilsners, but the malty backbone gives it balance. Perfect for those hot summer days ahead!

Moving on to Sierra Nevada, I checked out their Hazy Little Thing series and the latest Big Little Thing Imperial IPA. I was curious about its new version, and I’m happy to report it lives up to expectations! It features vibrant Citra hops and has moved up to 9.5% alcohol. If you enjoy imperial IPAs, you won’t want to miss this one.

Recently, I had the chance to chat with Sam Calagione from Dogfish Head. He threw the first pitch at a Red Sox game during Grateful Dead night. I finally tried their Grateful Dead Juicy Pale Ale, and it’s delicious! With fruity pineapple flavors and just a hint of bitterness, it’s a summer favorite in the making.

Now, let’s talk about Bunker Brewing and their English Style Bitter, Chick-A-Dee. I also tried their Barn Cat. This beer has beautiful notes of cocoa and molasses, balanced by a slight hop bitterness. It’s small breweries like this one that often surprise with gems that deserve more recognition.

On to some recent news: the World Beer Cup results are out! While Massachusetts didn’t snag many medals, Lost Shoe Brewing won gold for Size 6 in the Belgian-style Dubbel category. Boston Beer Co. also brought home bronze for their Samuel Adams Summer Ale in the Fruit Wheat Beer category. These wins highlight the growing quality of craft beer in the state.

Finally, I want to share a special release from Leadfoot Brewing in Chicopee, held in memory of my great-nephew, Justin Lingenberg, who passed away in 2019. This year’s spring ale is called Batch 14, evolving from its previous styles. Proceeds will support families facing financial hardships during cancer treatment—truly a cause worth supporting. The release party is on May 18 at Leadfoot Brewing, and it’s a wonderful opportunity to enjoy good beer for a great cause.
