Chennai Vande Bharat Trains Eliminate Non-Vegetarian Breakfast Options: What Passengers Need to Know

CHENNAI: Passengers on the Vande Bharat Express from Chennai to Nagercoil, Mysuru, Bengaluru, and Tirunelveli are upset about the sudden removal of non-vegetarian breakfast options. This change caught them off guard, as no notification was given by Southern Railway or the catering service.

While booking tickets on the IRCTC app, travelers now see a message saying non-veg meals are only available for lunch and dinner. However, many report a different experience on board. David Manohar, a recent traveler, stated, “We saw the non-veg note while booking, but when we boarded, we only got vegetarian meals. IRCTC told me that non-veg was unavailable for evening tea, but they later deleted that post.”

Many passengers feel frustrated. N Muralidharan, who frequently travels between Chennai and Tirunelveli, said that the quality of meals has also dropped. “The food isn’t satisfying; the dal is watery, and the rice portions are too small,” he added.

Others, like A L Selvam, commented that the menu focuses too much on North Indian dishes, which do not cater to local tastes. “A lot of food goes untouched,” he remarked.

This situation highlights a growing concern among travelers about the onboard dining experience. Statistics from a recent survey indicated that around 65% of train passengers are unhappy with meal choices. This dissatisfaction can often lead to negative perceptions of traveling by train, especially as meals are included in ticket prices.

Historically, train travel in India has evolved. There was a time when meals were a major selling point for luxury trains. However, changes in management and catering have led to issues like these, raising questions about the quality and availability of food options on trains today.

As complaints continue to mount, it seems unclear if and when the IRCTC will address these concerns. For updates, refer to trusted sources like the Indian Railways Official Site.
