Children’s Mercy has achieved a significant milestone by reaching its $150 million goal for the Illuminate initiative, more than two years ahead of schedule. This five-year plan aims to tackle the growing pediatric mental health crisis in our region.
Launched in Summer 2023, Illuminate has introduced nearly 14 new initiatives. These programs help kids access mental health support earlier, streamline their paths to care, and provide services that were previously unavailable.
Dr. Alejandro Quiroga, President and CEO of Children’s Mercy, emphasized the importance of community involvement: “No child should ever have to wait for mental health support. Illuminate is our commitment to making sure every child is seen early and supported fully.” He noted that the growing need for mental health care will be met with an expanding set of services.
The campaign gained momentum thanks to over 5,000 generous donors. The annual Red Hot Night gala on February 28 raised a record-breaking $5.5 million, pushing the campaign past its goal. This event has been a crucial part of the initiative for three years, highlighting the real impact on families and children.
Dr. Jenea Oliver, Senior Vice President of Communications, shared how this initiative reflects a collective commitment. “Each gift is a beacon of hope, representing our shared belief in accessible mental health care,” she said.
Mental health issues in children are on the rise. A recent report by the CDC revealed that nearly 1 in 5 adolescents experience a mental health condition. Initiatives like Illuminate are crucial in addressing this urgent need.
