BOISE, Idaho — In a chilling incident, two surviving roommates of the University of Idaho stabbing victims spoke about a masked man in their home on the morning of November 13, 2022. Court documents released recently reveal their text messages around 4 a.m. that morning. One roommate expressed her fear after supposedly seeing a man in a ski mask. She tried to reach out to her friends but received no responses.
One of the roommates, referred to as D.M., shared her panic with B.F., saying she was confused and frightened. D.M. detailed a sighting of a man whose face was covered, similar to a ski mask. In response, B.F. urged D.M. to run to their room for safety.
Bryan Kohberger faces four counts of murder for allegedly killing Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen, and Kaylee Goncalves at their rental house in Moscow, Idaho. He has pleaded not guilty, and his trial is set for later this year.
On that fateful night, one of the surviving roommates reported waking up around 4 a.m. to strange noises. She thought she heard someone say, “There’s someone here,” but saw nothing when she looked outside her bedroom. Later, she thought she heard crying from Kernodle’s room. During another glance outside, she perceived a male voice reassuring someone, saying, “It’s OK, I’m going to help you.”
As the situation unfolded, she opened her door and saw a masked figure in black clothes walking toward her. In a state of shock, she backed into her room and locked the door, later providing investigators with her account. Authorities believe the suspect then exited the home. There’s still no clear answer as to why it took several hours for the police to be alerted.
Mental health experts note that in traumatic situations, people often experience a range of responses: some might feel a strong impulse to fight, others to flee, and some may freeze in fear. Understanding these reactions can provide insight into how individuals cope in crisis moments.
