During a recent press conference in Beijing, China’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wang Yi, took a friendlier stance regarding U.S. relations. This was a shift from the more aggressive comments made earlier in the week.
Wang urged the U.S. not to impose “arbitrary tariffs” and to respond to goodwill with kindness. He said the U.S. and China need to coexist peacefully, as both countries will play significant roles in the world for years to come.
“China and the U.S. have many common interests,” he noted. “It’s possible for us to be partners and support each other’s success.”
Wang, who is also a key figure in the Communist Party, shared his thoughts during China’s annual parliamentary meeting, known as the “Two Sessions.” He emphasized the importance of improving ties with other nations, especially those outside the Western sphere of influence.
This more diplomatic tone followed a rise in tensions after U.S. President Trump announced new tariffs on Chinese goods. The Chinese government responded firmly, indicating a readiness to “fight till the end” if a trade war escalates. They also implemented targeted tariffs on U.S. agricultural products.
However, there is some openness for dialogue. Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao suggested that Beijing is willing to discuss trade issues with the U.S.
On another front, Wang Yi expressed China’s desire to help achieve peace in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, although he emphasized that China’s friendship with Russia remains strong. He also called for a two-state solution regarding the situation in Gaza, stating that current efforts are just a step towards that goal.
Wang argued that external pressures have not hindered China’s technological growth and said that Beijing is open to sharing its technology with other nations. Furthermore, he revealed plans for an 8.4% increase in spending on diplomatic efforts in the upcoming budget, reflecting China’s commitment to strengthening its global presence.
