Claims have been making the rounds on social media that China’s space agency might have uncovered hidden NASA data about the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS. However, there’s no solid proof to back this up. Both NASA and China’s space agency, CNSA, haven’t shared new images since the comet’s fly-by near Mars in October, leading some to think they might be withholding information.
The Comet 3I/ATLAS
Discovered on July 1, 2025, by the ATLAS telescope in Chile, 3I/ATLAS is the third known interstellar object, following ‘Oumuamua in 2017 and Borisov in 2019. When scientists first observed it using the Hubble Space Telescope, they found an icy core surrounded by a faint gaseous halo. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) also detected high carbon dioxide levels in its atmosphere. A recent study highlighted that the CO₂-to-water ratio is one of the highest recorded, suggesting the comet originated in a colder environment than most Solar System comets.
Why No Photos Yet?
When 3I/ATLAS zipped past Mars on October 3, several orbiters were in position to take pictures. Yet, no high-resolution images have been released. Reports indicate that the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter did snap some images, but they only captured a faint halo without any distinct tail. This has fueled conspiracy theories online.
A thread on Reddit even pointed out the lack of images three days post-fly-by, questioning why China had not released anything to outshine NASA.
Is China Really Exposing NASA’s Secrets?
To date, there’s no official evidence from China that claims to reveal hidden NASA data. China’s Tianwen-1 probe, which has shared over 14,000 images of Mars, hasn’t commented on 3I/ATLAS either. Some experts believe the delay in imagery is likely due to data-processing issues, not a cover-up.
Moreover, the timing of the silence aligns with a US government funding lapse in early October, restricting NASA operations and updates. Buzz over this has led to claims that technical issues are at play rather than secrecy.
NASA’s Take
NASA maintains that 3I/ATLAS is a harmless interstellar visitor. They assert that the comet’s composition can shed light on materials outside our Solar System. Some experts argue that these interstellar objects are challenging to capture in space because they are often far away and difficult to analyze quickly. Previous interstellar visitors like ‘Oumuamua and Borisov experienced similar delays before their data was released.
Looking Ahead
NASA expects to share more insights once 3I/ATLAS reaches perihelion in late October 2025, when it will be closest to the Sun and most visible. Moving forward, scientists plan to use JWST and ground telescopes to gather even more data on this comet.
